What is the Hague Convention?

The Hague Convention was created to protect children from the harmful effects of international abduction by a parent by encouraging the prompt return of abducted children to their country of habitual residence, and to organize or secure the effective rights of access to a child.

The convention was originally brought forward to ensure the safe return of children that had been abducted by the father. However, in this day & age 75% of the parents who are brought before the courts are mothers, who many of are fleeing domestic abuse, with the case being brought forward by the perpetrator. Unfortunately, we do still see abduction occur from both fathers and mothers and we’re here to provide you with the support you may need if you do need to ensure the genuine return of your child or if you have escaped with your child due to an abusive relationship.

Issues with the Convention

Although the Convention appears to be positive, it does come with some issues – In the majority of cases brought to the courts, even if clear evidence suggests violence or criminality from the parent, the convention insists that the child must be returned, in spite of credible risks to their safety.
